It wasn't your hands. It wasn't your age. And it definitely wasn't talent.
There's a guitar in your house right now. It cost real money. It has been leaned
against a wall, in a case, or under a bed for somewhere between six months and
fifteen years.
And you remember exactly how it went. You looked up a chord. You put your fingers
where the picture said. You strummed.
It sounded like a wet cardboard box falling down the stairs.
So you did the reasonable thing. You assumed you needed more practice. You
held that same shape again. And again. Twenty minutes a night, for a week. Then two
weeks. It still sounded wrong, and now your fingertips hurt, and somewhere in there
a quiet little voice said maybe I'm just not musical — and the guitar went
back in the corner.
Here is the part nobody ever told you, and it is going to annoy you:
The chord was almost right. One string was dead. Your ring finger was leaning
half a millimetre onto the B string and choking it — and you practised that
mistake three hundred times until your hand learned it perfectly.
That's it. That's the whole thing. Five strings ringing and one muted sounds
"bad" in a way a beginner cannot diagnose, because you can't hear what you don't
know to listen for. A teacher would have leaned over and fixed it in four
seconds. You didn't have a teacher. You had a video.
Videos talk at you. They have no idea whether you played it.
And that's true of the apps too. The big ones dress it up with a microphone icon
and a score that goes up, but their detection is famously easy to fool. A reviewer
at Guitar.com got a cough scored as "a perfect Fmaj7." The same review
logged a tuneless pick-scrape reading as E minor.
If an app will congratulate a cough, it was never going to catch your dead B string.

the course" and still can't change from C to G in time. This is the single most

The one thing that makes this different from every app you've already
quit. We built it first, and everything else is stacked on top of it.
The unique mechanism
It listens to every string separately.
Most detectors ask one lazy question: "did something chord-shaped
just happen in the room?" That's the question a cough can pass.
Guitar Reps asks six questions. It pulls the harmonics apart string by string and
checks that every single string of the shape is actually
ringing. Hold a C and it doesn't say "78%." It says this:

that would have saved you a month, and it is the entire reason this app exists.
And when it genuinely can't hear you — bad room, phone across the table — it says
"I couldn't hear that clearly." Not a pass. Not a fail.
No other app on the market has a third state, which tells you everything about
how much they trust their own numbers.

Sixty seconds, G to C, back and forth. That number is the single best predictor
of whether you'll ever play real songs. Clear your target and
tomorrow's goes up. Miss it badly and it comes down on purpose — because
grinding a number you can't hit cleanly just teaches your hand the wrong shape.

What do I actually need?
A guitar, a phone or laptop, and one earbud — so you can hear the app while its
microphone listens to you. Acoustic or electric both work. No cables, no interface,
nothing to install.
Is it really free, or is this a trial?
Really free, and not a trial. There is no card field anywhere on this site and
no clock running on your account. The Path, the 74 songs, the tuner, the chord
trainer and the rep timers are all open from the first minute. If we ever add a
paid tier it'll be for new extras — what's on this page stays free for people who
signed up early.
Why do you want my cell number?
Practice reminders, and only if you leave that box ticked. The reason people don't
learn guitar is almost never talent — it's that the guitar sat in the corner for
nine days. A text is the cheapest fix anyone has found. Reply STOP and it stops.
We don't sell your details.
I've tried apps before and quit. Why is this different?
Because of the one thing on this page: the app checks every string separately and
tells you which one is dead. Every app you quit could only ask "did something
chord-shaped happen?" — which is why a cough could score as a perfect Fmaj7 in a
published review. If the feedback can be fooled, the score is decorative, and a
decorative score can't tell you the one thing you needed to hear.
Where does "a cough scored as a perfect Fmaj7" come from?
A published review at Guitar.com testing a competing app's note detection. It's
one of several — Yousician's detection was described as producing "a lot of false
positives" (Tone Island, 2026), and Fender Play's as "more of a gimmick rather
than anything of use" (TheGuitarLesson, 2025). We didn't run those tests; we read
the reviews and built the thing they were all missing.
Am I too old / too uncoordinated / too late?
Step 3 is two fingers on two strings. Step 6 is a record you have heard a
thousand times, played with two chords. The instrument was designed by people who
wanted normal humans to play it around a fire. Nothing about it requires talent —
it requires reps, and reps only work if something tells you when they're clean.
Do I need to read music?
No. There is no notation anywhere in the app. Chord shapes, timing, and your own
ears.
How long until I can play something for real?
Step 6 of 24 is A Horse With No Name, and it lands roughly twenty minutes
in. That's not a marketing number — it's where the course puts it, because the
song only needs two chords and you'll have been graded on both.
